Paralegals and Working From Home

After the onset of what seemed like the largest downfall the economy had ever had, many people turned to the prospect of working at home as a way to earn an income. Many displaced workers sought the Internet venue as a way to earn enough to live on and care for families hit hard by the economy. One particular community of workers who were normally office bound also sought the new ground of working from home. The paralegal field had found its new home, and these professionals were now making decent incomes from the comforts of their own homes. They had many opportunities to work from home by outsourcing their time and services to lawyers who needed their expertise but did not want to have the high overhead of hiring a paralegal staff.

Nowadays with the rocky economy settling down, many of these paralegals (also known as Legal Assistants) are finding that they liked the freedom and the comfort of working from home, and instead of returning to the workforce; they have started their own freelance services. Which allows them to continue in the field while maintain the independence of being their own businesses.

Paralegals are professionals who work under the guidance of attorneys doing all manners of legal work with the exception of giving clients legal advice and representing those clients in court. While this limits what they can do on their own, it does not stop them from having a home business that provides them with a great income. The paralegal who works from home must be able to perform legal research, create documents, file information with the court (for the lawyer) and schedule the appointments of the attorney that they work for on any given assignment. In the past, all of these duties were performed by attorneys who were getting more experience while working in this capacity, however as the job grew so did the need for people who dedicated their careers to doing this particular job.

In order to start a business of their own, paralegals need to have all of the training that they can possibly get in each area of law. The paralegal should have at the very least a Certificate in Paralegal Studies, however some employers prefer that they have an Associate’s, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the Paralegal field, this depends on the level of the job, but this person must have an education to work at a legal job. It is important to obtain these degrees, however experience wins out every time. A homeworker with a ton of hands on experience may be more likely to be able to work from home, because the contacts they made in the field will allow them to advertise their services to people who are already familiar with the quality of the work they produce.

In addition, to having the proper training a person who works from home as a paralegal, the person should also possess the right skills needed to run and maintain a home business. This paralegal needs to know how to ensure that work is done on time, that it is up to the standard of the attorney supervising the project and that they are organized and prepared when they need to be. Finding work in this area depends mostly on your reputation, so building a positive one is very important to the success of your home company.

A paralegal also has a wide range of options, in choosing what work they are assigned, they may choose criminal law, Real Estate, and Contract law as well as many other interesting and challenging areas of the law. Being able to handle your business and learning how to solicit work from attorney is how a paralegal will make money, online or offline. The trick is to be able to keep your customers happy so that they keep sending you work.

For the paralegal interested in working from home, there are many really good reasons why this would be a great option, but before you do, make sure you have the right training and contacts to be able to go it alone.
